What are cement blocks?

Cement blocks are rectangular building units made from Portland cement, sand, gravel and water, machine-moulded and cured. Depending on your region you may hear them called concrete blocks, cinder blocks or CMUs. Hollow blocks are most common for everyday walls, and solid blocks are used where extra load capacity is needed. Popular US sizes include 8″ × 8″ × 16″, 6″ × 8″ × 16″, 10″ × 8″ × 16″ and 12″ × 8″ × 16″.

Pros & cons

✓ Advantages

  • Durability: high compressive strength and a long service life
  • Fire resistance: non-combustible
  • Speed: large units go up faster than brick
  • Versatility: suits both residential and commercial work

✕ Disadvantages

  • Heavy: needs more labour and handling equipment
  • Brittleness: can crack if dropped
  • Moisture: absorbs water unless sealed
  • Design limits: plain appearance unless rendered or clad

When to use them: structural walls, basement foundations and load-bearing work where durability and cost matter most.

How does this cement block calculator work?

It converts the wall and block measurements to the same unit, divides the wall face area by the block face area and rounds up.

Formula used

Total Blocks = (Wall Length × Wall Height) ÷ (Block Length × Block Height)

The result is always rounded up to the next whole block, because you can’t buy part of one. Wall thickness is shown in the diagram but does not change the count for a single-wythe wall.

Example

Scenario: A wall 10 m long and 2 m high, built with cement blocks measuring 40 cm × 20 cm (0.4 m × 0.2 m).

Wall area: 10 m × 2 m = 20 m²

Cement block face area: 0.4 m × 0.2 m = 0.08 m²

Final result: 20 ÷ 0.08 = 250 cement blocks. Add 5–10% for cuts and breakage when you order.

Frequently asked questions

How many cement bags do I need for mortar?

That depends on the mix and joint size. As a rough rule of thumb, allow about one 94 lb bag of masonry cement for every 30–35 standard 8″ × 16″ blocks. Check your mortar supplier’s coverage chart.

Are cement blocks and concrete blocks the same?

Yes. “Cement block” is an informal name, and the product is a concrete block made with cement as the binder.
